$600 Million in NY Taxpayer Funds Sent to Groups Opposing Federal Immigration Law

New York has funneled over half a billion dollars into nonprofit groups that oppose federal immigration enforcement, a move that’s raising serious concerns about the use of taxpayer money and the undermining of U.S. immigration laws.

Key Facts:

  • New York State and City have spent $600 million on nonprofits supporting illegal immigrants.
  • Bronx Defenders received over $500 million from NYC since 2009, plus $32 million in state contracts.
  • Make the Road NY was granted $56 million; NY Immigration Coalition (NYIC) got $46 million; NY Lawyers for the Public Interest received $19 million.
  • These groups publicly oppose ICE, President Trump, and federal immigration enforcement.
  • Some organizations use government funds to lobby for sanctuary policies and defy federal laws.

The Rest of The Story:

A review by the New York Post reveals that New York officials have directed $600 million of state and city tax dollars to nonprofit groups aiding illegal immigrants and opposing federal immigration enforcement.

Much of the funding came from city hall, the state legislature, and the governor’s office.

One of the top beneficiaries is the Bronx Defenders, which has collected over $500 million from New York City and an additional \$32 million in state contracts.

The group openly advocates for sanctuary laws and policies.

On June 11, it posted on X, “We have a couple ideas: pass New York For All and Dignity Not Detention now, before it’s too late.”

Other recipients include Make the Road NY ($56 million), NY Immigration Coalition ($46 million), and NY Lawyers for the Public Interest ($19 million).

NYIC’s Executive Director Murad Awadeh even declared, “New York City should not be in the business of carrying out Donald Trump’s mass disappearance agenda, which is in fact illegal under our local laws.”

However, federal immigration law is constitutionally supreme, and local laws cannot override it.

Commentary:

The idea that taxpayers are footing the bill for organizations actively working against federal law should be deeply troubling to every American.

It’s one thing to fund public services; it’s quite another to use public funds to wage ideological battles against national sovereignty and the rule of law.

New York’s leaders have prioritized ideology over accountability.

By pouring $600 million into groups like the Bronx Defenders and Make the Road NY, they are not only undermining immigration enforcement—they are rewarding defiance of federal authority.

Worse still, some of these organizations are using that taxpayer money to lobby the same government that funds them, pushing for even more radical sanctuary policies.

That’s not just unethical—it’s a perverse cycle of taxpayer-funded activism.

Murad Awadeh’s claim that cooperating with federal immigration enforcement is “illegal” under local laws reveals the twisted logic behind this entire agenda.

Federal immigration law is not optional. It is the law of the land.

No city or state has the right to pick and choose which parts it wants to follow.

This is about more than just immigration policy. It’s about respect for the rule of law and responsible stewardship of public funds.

These organizations are acting in open opposition to the nation’s legal framework while being richly rewarded by taxpayer dollars.

Meanwhile, hardworking citizens see their taxes siphoned off to fund the political activism of groups they may not support—groups whose mission is to help people stay in the country unlawfully.

If there was ever an example of government working against its own citizens, this is it.

The blatant misuse of funds, the intentional disregard for immigration enforcement, and the political posturing cloaked in “social justice” should alarm every taxpayer.

And this isn’t isolated to New York.

This kind of systemic abuse of taxpayer dollars is rampant across blue states and was one reason why the Trump administration shut down USAID—another conduit for similar funding practices.

The Bottom Line:

New York taxpayers are unknowingly bankrolling organizations that oppose federal law and promote sanctuary policies.

Over $600 million has been spent to support nonprofits that lobby against immigration enforcement and assist illegal immigrants.

This isn’t just bad fiscal policy—it’s a dangerous erosion of legal authority and a gross misuse of public trust.

If left unchecked, it sets a precedent that undermines both immigration law and the very foundations of responsible governance.
