In a candid conversation with Miranda Devine, former President Donald Trump doubled down on his belief that the events surrounding the 2016 election and its aftermath constituted a coordinated effort to undermine his presidency—a “failed coup,” as he described it.
Trump began by calling the actions taken during and after the 2016 election “so bad for this country.” He emphasized the impact of seeing the documentation behind it all: “There’s a difference when you know it and when you know it and it’s all written down for you.”
Devine responded with one word: “Proven.” Trump agreed, saying, “The orders, the memos, the whole thing is right there.”
When asked if he was surprised by what he saw in the classified files, Trump admitted, “I would have thought they maybe would have thrown it out.” He described the files as being kept in “highly classified” areas and noted the shock of discovering what was inside. “It’s unbelievable. A real hoax.”
He criticized those behind the operation, suggesting they should have spent their energy trying to “make America great again.” Instead, he said, “It’s also sick — and they’re sick.”
The conversation then turned to Hillary Clinton and the now-discredited Steele Dossier. Trump commended Devine: “Nobody’s covered it better than you.” He went on to praise Tulsi Gabbard for digging into the files and uncovering the truth: “She’s tough and she’s smart… she went deep into the files and she found it.”
Trump concluded by declaring the entire thing an “attempted coup.” He added, “It was a failed coup. I mean, I get to be — here we are, talking as president of the United States. So you almost had it happen.”
In Trump’s view, what started in 2016 wasn’t just political warfare—it was an orchestrated attempt to block his presidency. And now, he believes, the proof is in writing.
