Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential candidate for the upcoming election.
Trump made the announcement at the Republican National Convention on Monday night, just days after surviving an assassination attempt.
Vance beat out two other top contenders for the role: Florida Senator Marco Rubio and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.
Trump had recently hinted at his decision by pointing out potential issues with the other candidates.
He mentioned that Rubio’s Florida residency could be problematic, as Trump also claims the state as his home.

Trump also expressed concerns about Burgum’s support for strict abortion laws.
The choice of Vance is significant for several reasons:
1. Swing state appeal: Vance’s popularity in Ohio could help secure this important battleground state.
2. Unique background: Vance’s journey from a working-class upbringing to Yale Law School, as detailed in his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” may resonate with voters.
3. Fresh face: As a newcomer to national politics, Vance brings a different perspective to the ticket.
The Trump campaign likely sees Vance as someone who can connect with Rust Belt voters while also appealing to more traditional Republicans.

However, questions remain about how well Vance will align with Trump’s political style and messaging.
