Authorities in Minnesota are searching for a suspect who carried out two separate shootings targeting state lawmakers early Saturday morning.

The first attack occurred around 2 a.m. at the Champlin residence of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, both of whom were shot multiple times and are now recovering after surgery.

At around 3:35 a.m., police responded to a welfare check at the home of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park.

Officers encountered what appeared to be a police officer outside.

When they approached, the suspect opened fire and then fled after police returned fire.

Hortman and her husband Mark Ali were found dead.

The suspect had dressed in black body armor, carried a badge and a Taser, and drove a vehicle outfitted to look like a police SUV with flashing lights.

Investigators found a manifesto inside that vehicle, naming other public officials as possible targets.

“This was an act of targeted political violence,” Governor Tim Walz said. “We don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint in the state of Minnesota.”

President Trump issued a statement saying, “I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers.”

“Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”

Attorney General Pam Bondi echoed the sentiment: “The FBI is on the ground investigating this case alongside state and local partners. This horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson posted, “Such horrific political violence has no place in our society, and every leader must unequivocally condemn it. Our prayers are with the Hortman and Hoffman families as well as the people of Minnesota during this tragic time.”
