San Diego’s “Bubble Man” is facing unexpected legal challenges having been cited by park rangers after a performance Sunday.
Sandy Snakenburg, who runs the non-profit Bubble World, has been entertaining park-goers with his bubble shows for over ten years. His performances have become a local favorite, bringing smiles to children and adults alike.
Snakenburg describes his craft as “bubbleology,” a mix of science, art, and magic. His shows captivate audiences of all ages.
“Huge bubbles! It was so fun chasing them down trying to pop them,” says 13-year-old Adan, echoing the sentiment of many spectators.
However, Snakenburg’s bubble-blowing activities recently hit a snag. While performing at La Jolla Cove in California, a regular spot for his shows, Park Rangers issued him a citation for “liquid littering.”
They claim the bubble residue could harm the grass, an interpretation that has raised eyebrows given the seemingly harmless nature of his act.
What makes this more absurd is that Snakenburg isn’t a casual street performer. He operates Bubble World as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit and has taken steps to comply with local rules. “I am registered with San Diego Parks and Rec. I have insurance,” Snakenburg explains, pointing out his efforts to follow regulations.

Snakenburg, a disabled veteran, he lives in his work truck and depends on tips from his performances. “I don’t take advantage of any of the programs offered to me. I’m fully supported by this,” he says, highlighting how crucial these shows are to his livelihood.
The citation doesn’t include a fine but requires a court appearance in October. This development has left many questioning whether such enforcement is a good use of public resources or if it’s an overly strict reading of local laws.
Despite this hurdle, Snakenburg remains committed to his bubble shows. “I have a heart condition. I look at life a bit differently than other people and it’s more in the moment,” he says, showing the positive attitude that has made him a community favorite.
