China’s Secret Science War? FBI Busts Another Chinese Student With Concealed Bio-Materials

A Chinese PhD student from Wuhan has been charged with smuggling biological materials into the United States, raising fresh concerns about foreign threats to national security through scientific institutions.

Key Facts:

  • Chinese national Chengxuan Han was arrested on June 8 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport for smuggling biological material into the U.S.
  • Han is a PhD student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
  • She allegedly sent concealed biological material related to roundworms to a University of Michigan lab before her arrival.
  • Han admitted to lying to Customs and Border Protection and later confessed to the FBI about the contents of the packages.
  • This follows a separate case just a week earlier where two other Chinese researchers were charged with smuggling a fungus classified as a potential agroterrorism weapon.

The Rest of The Story:

According to the Justice Department, Chengxuan Han attempted to smuggle biological material related to roundworms into the U.S. by sending packages to a lab affiliated with the University of Michigan.

She was arrested on Sunday after landing in Detroit and initially lied to Customs and Border Protection officials when questioned about the contents of the packages.

She later admitted to the FBI that the parcels contained the concealed materials and that she had intentionally misled authorities.

Han is pursuing a doctorate in life sciences from a university in Wuhan, China—the same city that was at the center of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Authorities said this case fits a broader trend.

“The alleged smuggling of biological materials by this alien from a science and technology university in Wuhan, China—to be used at a University of Michigan laboratory—is part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security,” U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon, Jr. said.

Multiple federal agencies, including the FBI, CBP, and ICE, are actively investigating.

Commentary:

Let’s not kid ourselves—this isn’t just about a student making a mistake with customs paperwork.

This is the second known instance in a week where Chinese nationals have attempted to bring in potentially dangerous biological material.

China has been executing a long-term, under-the-radar campaign to undermine American security.

Whether it’s flooding our streets with fentanyl, hacking our infrastructure, or inserting operatives into our research labs, the pattern is clear.

And now, it appears they’re testing new methods—through biological materials that could, under the right (or wrong) conditions, damage our agriculture or health systems.

Why are U.S. universities still opening their doors to students and researchers from institutions tied to the Chinese Communist Party?

Wuhan-based labs have already drawn global scrutiny for their lack of transparency.

Yet here we are again—allowing individuals trained at these facilities to walk straight into our most respected research institutions.

This isn’t about xenophobia—it’s about national survival.

American taxpayers should not be subsidizing labs that may be compromised or weaponized against them.

The security breach is not just theoretical—it’s real, and it’s happening in plain sight.

Congress, university boards, and federal agencies need to put the brakes on these arrangements immediately.

There should be an immediate review and restriction on all research collaborations with universities based in China—especially those with military or biotechnology links.

And why are we still letting individuals from Wuhan walk into our research centers unvetted?

It’s time to rethink how open we want our borders to be when it comes to sensitive scientific fields.

Our national security is at stake.

The Bottom Line:

A Chinese PhD student’s attempt to sneak biological material into a U.S. lab is part of a disturbing trend.

The infiltration of American institutions by foreign actors tied to hostile regimes needs to be taken seriously.

As evidence builds, so does the case for a total reevaluation of how we vet and admit foreign researchers into critical sectors.

The longer we delay, the more vulnerable we become.
