CNN’s chief national correspondent John King has laid out a very real scenario where former President Donald Trump could secure a landslide victory in the 2024 election. This analysis, coming from a network that is predominantly left-leaning, reinforces the growing concerns within the Democratic Party about President Biden’s re-election prospects.
King pointed to recent polls showing Biden’s approval rating and ballot numbers dipping below 40% in key battleground states. With just 16 weeks until the election, King suggested it would be “very hard” for Biden to reverse this trend.
“Democrats are now worried,” King stated, highlighting that Biden might need to devote more resources to traditionally blue states like Virginia.
A recent Virginia Commonwealth University-Wilder School poll illustrates this concern, showing Biden’s support dropping from 42% in January to 36% now. Trump now leads Biden by three percentage points in Virginia, a state Biden won by 10 points in 2020.

The electoral map appears to be shifting in Trump’s favor. King noted that Trump is now leading or competitive in critical states such as Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Arizona, and Wisconsin. This has led some Democrats to conclude that “Donald Trump is on a viable path as of today to get to 330 electoral votes or even higher,” according to King.

Several factors are contributing to Biden’s struggles. King cited the president’s low approval ratings, concerns about his age, and negative perceptions of the economy as “very bad” for Biden’s chances.
“Even if you go back to where we started, Donald Trump is in command and the numbers are getting worse for the president,” King told host Wolf Blitzer who appeared stunned at the news.
Adding to Biden’s woes, a recent AP-NORC survey found that 65% of Democrats believe Biden should withdraw from the race following what many viewed as a poor debate performance. This poll, conducted from July 11-15, revealed that 7 in 10 adults overall share this view.
As the Republican convention approaches, King suggested that Trump has an opportunity to further solidify his position. With Biden’s numbers declining and Trump’s support growing, the 2024 election landscape appears increasingly favorable for the former president.
