The Social Security Administration (SSA) is rolling out a significant change to its online access system. Millions of Americans who use the “My Social Security” portal will soon need to switch to a new login method. This transition aims to improve security and streamline access across government agencies.
What’s Changing?
Users who created their online accounts before September 18, 2021, will need to switch to a Login.gov account. This change affects a large number of people – about 46 million users still need to make the transition. However, over 5 million account holders have already adopted the new two-step authentication process and won’t need to create a new account.
The SSA hasn’t set a firm deadline for this transition. A spokesperson stated, “We are currently in the beginning stages of this transition process and our current goal is to notify the public about these upcoming changes.”
How to Make the Switch
For those ready to update their accounts, the process is straightforward:
- Log in using your existing credentials
- Look for the option to switch to “Login.gov”
- Select this option
- Confirm that your account has been successfully linked
After completing these steps, you’ll have full access to your personal “My Social Security” services.

Why the Change?
The SSA hopes this new system will help address what they call a “customer service crisis.” One major goal is to reduce the long wait times callers experience when using the agency’s 800 number.
Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley expressed enthusiasm for the change, saying, “My Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us. We’re excited to transition to Login.gov to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies.”
The agency has already seen improvements in call wait times. In April, the average call lasted about 24 minutes, down from 42 minutes in November. They’re aiming to further reduce this to about 32 minutes by the end of September 2025.
What Can You Do with Your Account?
“My Social Security” accounts offer a range of free services. Both current beneficiaries and those not yet receiving benefits can use these accounts to:
- Apply for and manage benefits
- Request replacement Social Security cards
- Estimate future benefits
- Check the status of benefit applications
The SSA emphasizes that this online portal is a secure way for people to handle their Social Security business efficiently.
